Quebec Museum of Archaeology
The Montérégie region lies just south of the Island of Montreal, halfway between Québec City and Ottawa. It owes its name to small mountains called the “Monteregian Hills” that rise up from the plain. Bordered by waterways, this region was the cradle of Québec culture. Today, it offers a chance not only to enjoy wide open spaces within easy reach of the city, but also to explore a rich heritage that is protected and presented by the Montérégie Museums.
DISCOVERIES
The Montérégie region boasts a wealth of cultural resources related to art, history, ethnology, archaeology, science and technology. Amerindians have lived here for over 6000 years. The area was explored by Champlain, and French settlement began as early as 1642. The region’s history has been marked by figures like Borduas, the artist who penned the manifesto known as the Refus global, and Papineau, the leader of the Parti patriote. The Montérégie is also where Canada’s first railroad was built. You can learn about all this and more by visiting our Discoveries section. It will give you a foretaste of the riches offered by each of the Montérégie Museums.
IN ADDITION TO EXHIBITIONS
The Montérégie Museums take pride in thinking up imaginative ways to make your visit both entertaining and instructive. They offer not only fascinating exhibitions, with or without a guide, but also an impressive array of original cultural and educational activities, including cruises, tram rides, Amerindian food tastings, guided visits to heritage villages, cultural trips and art workshops for children and adults.
The Montérégie Museums also organize events around traditional activities, such as the Seigneuriales in Vaudreuil and the Journée nationale des Patriotes at Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu. In our Calendar section, you’ll find a number of activities that are sure to appeal to the most varied interests.
THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
The Montérégie forms a beautiful valley, nestled between the mountains and the St. Lawrence River. You can combine your visit to a museum with one of the numerous tourist attractions offered by the region, known for its locally produced foods, panoramic landscapes and picturesque villages and neighbourhoods. The Museums section presents you with a vast choice of places to spend a memorable day. All of the Montérégie Museums are easy to reach, their entrance fees are very reasonable and there is ample parking space.
SCHOOL ZONE
Every museum in the network has developed educational programs for school groups, in keeping with different levels in the education system. You can find a list of these programs in the School zone section and watch video clips presenting the educational offerings of each museum. To reserve an activity, simply contact the museum of your choice.
DISCOVERIES FOR ALL
Whether you visit on your own, as a couple, with a family or in a group, the Montérégie Museums can help you organize a fulfilling day, both in summer and winter. Come and take a look around!
