Principal theme : HISTORY

Located at Saint-Paul-de-l'Île-aux-Noix, the Blockhaus de la rivière Lacolle testifies to 230 years of history in the Upper Richelieu area. A blockhouse is a detached fort, normally constructed of square timber, and owes its name to the fact that it blocks access to a strategic point. Built around 1781, this blockhouse was part of a regional defensive system set up by the British in preparation for the possibility of American attack. It is the only defensive work of its kind constructed in Québec to have survived to the present day. The two-storey building, with the upper floor overhanging the first, has a pyramid-shaped roof and timber walls pierced with loopholes and embrasures for firing rifles and cannon. It was classified as a historic monument in 1960.
